For the descendents of Richard Dearie and his son John Russell

"Mr. J. A. Russell, who practically owns the New Town, Ipoh, is back from his holiday at Home. Report has it, states the Times of Malaya, that Mr. Russell intends building 52 shop houses on the Yau Tet Shin Padang, Ipoh, which Padang the late Towkay Yau Tet Shin intended should remain forever a public playground, though he forgot to make it over to the town. Thus it passed into Mr. Russell’s hands when Mr. Russell purchased the Yau Tet Shin property in the New Town"

The Singapore Free Press and Mercantile Advertiser, 2 February 1928, Page 9

" Mr J. A. Russell, of Kuala Lumpur, who owns the New Town, Ipoh, is to build a cinema hall in Hume Street, while Eng Khoon is already building one in Brewster Road, near the Birch Bridge."

The Straits Times 12 August 1916, page 6.

The original cinema that Archie built in 1916 was rebuilt in 1932 and rented to the Shaw brothers. After the war it was renamed the Rex. " It was said to be haunted. There were two dragon statues near the stage which had previously belonged to the Isis Theatre. These were to protect the audience from the spirits of those Chinese who had died and their funeral rites had been held, either in the coffin shops or the upstairs terminally ill 'convalescent homes', all sited directly behind the building."

"The Choong Wah cinema was sited at the corner of Anderson Road (now Jalan Raja Musa Aziz) and Theatre Street (now Jalan Theatre), a famous place for hawkers in the 1930’s, particularly the “Luk-luk” man. At one time the cinema was also well known for featuring professional boxing matches as an alternative to movies"

J. A Russell's property in Ipoh

"With reference to what has become known as the “Ipoh Land Deal” which, as being probably the largest transaction of its kind yet on record in the F.M.S., and in connection with which so many names have been mentioned and so many rumours afloat, The Malay Mail has ascertained that negotiations have now definitely been concluded, and the transfer deeds signed. The purchaser is Mr. J. A. Russell of Kuala Lumpur. In this connection it is interesting to note that Mr. J. A. Russell is already the largest individual European shop house property owner in the towns of Kuala Lumpur and Seremban, and will now be so in Ipoh."

LETTER FROM: - J. A. Russell & Co. TO: - The Collector of Land revenue, Kinta, Batu Gajah. 27th July, 1922 Kuala Lumpur, 27th July, 1922 Sir, Surrender in respect of Plans 23428} Area of 14.6 P 23429 A} 23249 B} In compliance with the request contained in your 12 in K.L.O. 633/21 of 24th ultimo, we have the honour to enclose herewith Form of Surrender duly completed. Also attached is the original Power of Attorney, Mr. J. A. Russell to Mr. R. C. Russell. May we ask that this be returned promptly? On previous occasions Powers of Attorney have been held for long periods causing considerable inconvenience here. For this reason we will defer asking the Agent of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation for his original Power or Attorney as it is in almost daily use here, until we hear from you that it is absolutely necessary to your requirements. The tracing requested was in connection with the small corner surrendered by us to Government free of charge. We presume that when requesting payment of $1/- being cost of tracing this fact was overlooked. We have the honour to be, Sir, Your obedient servants, Per Pro J. A. Russell and Co. H.H. Robbins.

LETTER FROM: - J. A. Russell & Co. TO: - The District Office, Kinta, Batu Gajah. 29th June, 1923 Kuala Lumpur, 29th June 1923.

Sir, We have the honour to refer to your correspondence K.L.O. 223/18 on the subject of the re-arrangement of the shop lots at the corner of Anderson Street and Hume Street, Ipoh. 2. We now wish to erect 5 shop houses on the re-arranged Hume Street lots but the Asst: Building Inspector, Ipoh has informed us that until one shop house facing Anderson Street has been demolished and all boundary stones are fixed we cannot proceed with building. 3. The shop house in Anderson Street has now been demolished and we would ask you to have the boundary stones fixed; although the re-survey was completed towards the end of 1919 and survey fees paid, stones apparently were not fixed owing to the fact that a shop house occupied the area we were surrendering to Government for a back lane to Hume Street. We have the honour to be, Sir, Your obedient servants, J. A. Russell and Co.

LETTER FROM: -J. A. Russell & Co. TO: - The Collector of Land Revenue, Ipoh. 17th July, 1923 Kuala Lumpur, 17th July, 1923.

Sir, We have the honour to refer to our letter of the 26th February when we forwarded you our cheque for $578/70 being rent for 1923 on our Ipoh property. 2. We omitted to include the rent on C.T. 1418 and in the letter requested you to let us know what the amount due was as the title had been subdivided and part of the land sold to the Government. 3. We have had no reply to our enquiry and now we find our agent in Ipoh has paid your Notice of Demand for $33/80 rent on C. T. 1418 and notice fee 0.50 cents. 4. We do not understand how a Demand Notice was issued for C. T. 1418 as this title does not exist, having been surrendered, and we, therefore, must ask for a refund of the $34/30 paid by our Agent. 5. Will you please let us know the rent due on the land originally held under C. T. 1418 excluding the area sold to the Government. We have the honour to be, Sir, Your obedient servants, J. A. Russell and Co. Notes Underneath Forwarded. The title is still in the name of J. A. Russell in my rent book. In the Index the title is still in the name of J. A. Russell.
